Using electricity storage to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

While energy storage is key to increasing the penetration of variable renewables, near-term effects on greenhouse gas emissions are uncertain. Several studies have shown that operation can increase even if has 100% turnaround efficiency. Furthermore, previous relied national-level data and given very little attention impacts at local scales. This an important omission, as carbon intensities vary significantly sub-national We introduce a novel approach calculating regional marginal factors, based validated power system model regression analysis. The techniques used investigate CO2 in Great Britain 2019, under range operating scenarios. It found there significant differences with tending when for wind balancing areas curtailment. In contrast, greatest reductions achieved charging otherwise-curtailed renewables discharging reduce peak demands consuming high volumes fossil fuel power.
